Always late on linking up to good blogs, but better late than never. This is the stuff that's been in my feed lately:
- I never really look to Mod revival acts for clothes ideas, but some of you might and if that's the case, you'll dig this review on shoes worn around those revival days.
- Nick Rossi of A Modernist sent me this great blog post on John Brandt, mid-century graphic artist and animator, which not only features his work, but a little history on Disney animator, Ward Kimball.
- My pal, Maria, wrote this piece on the Three O'Clock from the perspective of a gay woman growing up with the Paisley Underground.
- I never get into the female aspect of Mod stuff, not being female and all, but here's a take on it to give some perspective on current happenings in fashion.
- Whatever you might think of the Style Council, you have to admit they had some great-looking record sleeves!
- WOW! Some beautiful photos from Massachusetts jazz club, Lennies, worth your view.
- You know what I said up above about revival clothes? Well, something eventually clicked with '80s Mods, because they definitely came back with style! (Well... maybe not the white socks...)
- Hey, I have a copy of this 1967 Gear Guide! After all, when I get my time machine working, I'll be needing a 'Hip Pocket Guide to Britain's Swinging Fashion Scene.'
- David Walker, of the Modculture site, provides a great take on the state of 'Mod' bands. Like I said on my FB page, the last 3 paragraphs captured my feelings.
- What, you thought Wonder Woman was the only DC comics character to go 'Mod'? Pssh... get ready to Swing with Scooter!
- Great. Just great. Anorak Thing's April playlist just put 'Pleasant Valley Sunday' in my head on repeat. But that's not a bad thing!
- Friends, don't be jealous of us Northern Californians who have closer access to the Mid-Century Modern exhibit going on at the Charles Schulz Museum. Snoopy + MCM = awesomeness.
- Another great April playlist from Monkey Picks (featuring the funk rock of Black Merda and the soul jazz of Don Patterson).
- More photos from the LIFE 1966 Watts article have been unearthed!
- A nice gallery of the Ivy League hitting the record cover scene.
- Information on the chance to catch Slade's Noddy Holder talking about his career.
- Learn a bit about John Kloss, the man behind some of your favorite '60s fashion designs.
- More Reggie King love from Monkey Picks! (Dang, that blog is on a roll.)
- Get hip to the jazz stylings of Gary McFarland.
- And end the week with one of my all-time faves, "Take This Hurt Off Me," which always brings me back to those college days of no money, no clubs, but still able to explore good music in friends' living rooms without a giant 'scene' around us.
That's it for this week! Ahh... the mysteries of childhood:
