Mod Gone Wrong? (Olympics Edition)

On one hand, there's this:

... and this:

But on the other hand, there's this:

This guy's pure, exuberant joy while riding on the back of that scooter as part of the Closing Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games reflects the pride I'm sure most Londoners must have been feeling during the ceremonies, and that's enough to melt any sarcasm left in my heart.

So, I'll let Willy Wonka take it away:

  1. FYI, the smiling rider is Keiser Chief's lead singer Ricky Wilson who covered Pinball Wizard a few moments after that photo was taken.

    1. I like his expression even more, then. Instead of being Mr. Cool up there, he seems geniunely happy to be a part of it all!

    1. Dollybirds were in costume and likely had to dress out for another part in the event. I noticed the shoes too, and no mod girl in her right mind would be caught dead in those trainers. One didn't know where to put her feet while riding pillion, thus not a scooter girl. All that aside though, the closing ceremonies were amazing! Kaiser Chiefs did a great job, as did the Who and everyone in between.

    2. SX appeal, yeah they were just volunteers for the event, so I figured they needed those shoes to run around quickly for the next portions of the happenings. I didn't think they were really mods or anything. I just thought it was awesome funny!

I'm hoping if there is a revival, new mods will start walking around in those shoes!

    3. Loved it, was good to see the scooters some where genuinly nice, who stole the show for me! and a great performance from ray davis as well. Felt there was a few mod connections throu out the ceramony. Will it spark a new mod revival? My feeling is that it was happening any way! but next year is the 50th year since the first mods appeared in the mainstream so this could give it an extra push. But do we realy want mod in the mainstream again? all i want is to keep it alive for the next generation! ps before the spelling police pull me up for spelling mistakes, ive got dyslexia so gaining some kind off interlectual hi ground by commenting on that part of my post, is only going to make you look like a twat! so dont! its just another form of disability discrimanation! peace and ktf. :)

    4. Barry, don't worry... I don't get down on spelling mistakes like that! (Trust me, I make enough without dyslexia!)

Unfortunately, we missed the Ray Davies and Who segments thanks to NBC cutting the ceremony off to debut a new sitcom. At that point, I went to sleep and missed the later show.

I'm with you... I don't need this in the mainstream. That's when things tend to get boring and watered down. That said, many of us will suffer through it and remain into it after it's out of fashion again.

  3. MOd puppets !!! all of them. They have no idea what MOD is really all about. But it's impossible to explain what mod was and should be to those who only base it on that Quad film and don't know any better
