Being from New Jersey and having grown up around the "Jersey Shore" types (they're real, though luckily I'm too far South to encounter that many of them) this post strikes near and dear to my heart. For the record the latest "Mojo" reports Weller has a signature line in Liam's Pretty Green clothing firm, among the itemsoffered, and I kid you not...a black tank top with satin trim!
Yeah, Patrick, someone else brought up the Northern Soul thing but I had the same response as you. That's fine those dancers dressed that way, but doesn't mean it looked good!
I'm sure he get's his hair cut at The Gastsby, too! Yeah, I watch 'Jerseylicious" so shoot me! It's not as annoying as "Jersey Shore". Bill, I've been to your neck of New Jersey, and I can't recall see any "shore" types in that area when I was there. Even made a few trips to Cherry Hill Mall, didn't really see any there either.
Oh sweet baby Jeebus. What the????? I blame that youngster he has been cavorting around with lately Exhibit A: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-1103291/Shambolic-Paul-Weller-pictured-lying-gutter-drunken-night-young-lover.html
Yeah, he was body and style snatched by that Hannah person (I can't call her his wife). I just learned that hideous, sleeveless, satin trimmed tee is called a "singlet"...it's British for GOD AWFUL!
Oh my god, Carla... we came to that exact same conclusion last night! We were discussing with a friend (cuz that's what we do on Thursday nights) and she brought up the influence of the current girlfriend. Plus, if you compare it to the influence Dee C. Lee had on him back in the day (leading to his modern 'soul' sound), it TOTALLY makes sense!
In all fairness to PW's current wife, he's been wearing tank tops for a while. Here he is in The Style Council wearing one. http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/gallery/2010/mar/28/paul-weller-life-in-pictures#/?picture=360760614&index=12
Also, tank tops/wife beaters originated in Italy and became popular with soldiers stationed there during WWII. So in a way it is classic Italian fashion.
I rest my case.

ReplyDeleteJust to play devil's advocate, Soul Boys did dress like that at The Torch, the Blackpool Mecca and the Wigan Casino.

But to be clear, you would NEVER see me in something like that!
